The Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) has highlighted various enhancements and initiatives as the New Year unfolds, particularly focusing on waste and recycling services and introducing a novel sidewalk repair program. According to the City and County of Denver, residents in Solid Waste Collection Districts 1, 6, 7, and 9 can now sign up for compost collection services, they must specify their preferred cart size by January 10 to ensure timely delivery in February or March.
To match compost collection with user needs and improve recycling efficiency, DOTI is transitioning to alternating weekly recycling and every-nine-week sizable item pickup services this year, urging residents to check their 2025 schedules online or through the Denver Trash and Recycling Mobile App that assists users with reminders for their waste services; saving space in recycling carts has been suggested by breaking down boxes, this advice is timely given local participation in the ongoing Treecycle program.
Highlighting the city's commitment to sustainability, DOTI invites residents to participate in the Treecycle program, providing an opportunity for holiday trees to be recycled into mulch. Designated drop sites for trees are open across the city with varying operation hours, including an extended schedule at the Central Platte Campus until 4 p.m. on Saturdays, before dropping off for recycling, residents need to remove all decorations and tree stands.
With the new sidewalk program slated to roll out this year after voter approval in 2022, Denver will begin assessing fees to property owners, integrated into their stormwater bills, to fund repairs and construction of sidewalks, and property owners should visit the official DOTI website to access the new tools, including a fee lookup tool and rebate form. These measures are in place to promote transparency and affordability while addressing infrastructure needs, and reports of significant sidewalk damages can be filed online with DOTI committing to spot repairs and developing a comprehensive sidewalk master plan as they begin collecting fees for the program.
