The Detroit casino trio reported a total of $109.6 million in aggregate revenue for December 2024, as per a recent announcement. Most of this revenue was earned through table games and slots, which accounted for $109.3 million, while retail sports betting brought in a modest $276,509. MGM Grand Detroit continues to lead the pack with 47% market share, followed by MotorCity Casino at 30% and Hollywood Casino at Greektown with 23%, according to the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

December's figures suggest a slight downturn of 1.9% in table games and slot revenue compared to December 2023; nevertheless, the numbers indicate a 2.7% increase from the previous month. Through the year, from January to December, the casinos’ table games and slots revenue saw a positive trend with a 4.9% rise over the same period the previous year. However, not all casinos fared the same, with MGM reporting a 1.3% increase, while MotorCity and Hollywood Casino at Greektown experienced decreases of 4.8% and 4.1%, respectively.

The state of Michigan benefited from $8.9 million in gaming taxes collected from the casinos in December. When examining the fourth quarter of 2024, there was an 18.7% surge in revenue compared to the same period in 2023. This uplift was reflected across all three casinos, with MGM Grand Detroit experiencing a significant rise of 26.4%, MotorCity Casino up by 15.9%, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown increasing by 8.5%. These gains translated into $25.9 million in gaming taxes being paid to the state for this quarter.

Retail sports betting, on the other hand, did not perform as robustly. The total gross receipts of $279,649 for December were down drastically by 94.2% from December 2023 and by 85.6% compared to November 2024. MGM Grand Detroit notably reported negative receipts, at negative ($154,514), while MotorCity and Hollywood Casino at Greektown garnered $342,638 and $88,385, respectively. December's wagering taxes collected from these activities were modest, with the state receiving $16,293 and the City of Detroit, $19,913.

Looking at the annual figures, the Detroit casinos claimed a total aggregate revenue of $1.29 billion for the year from slots, table games, and retail sports betting, as stated by the Michigan Gaming Control Board. The breakdown reveals that slots were responsible for the lion's share with $1.03 billion, while table games and retail sports betting accounted for the remainder. In comparison to 2023, MGM Grand Detroit's earnings from slots and table games rose by 7.0% to $603.72 million, MotorCity increased by 3.3% to $385.87 million, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown saw a modest hike of 2.7% to $292.86 million. However, aggregate retail sports betting receipts experienced a decrease of 30.6% from the previous year, highlighting a challenging market for this sector.

Nearing the close of the fiscal year, in November, fantasy contest operators in the state reported adjusted revenues of $1.2 million with the state collecting $100,486 in taxes. The cumulative revenue for these operators from January through November was reported at $8.5 million, contributing $713,587 in taxes. These figures, while separate from the casino earnings, add to the overall picture of gambling and gaming-related revenue streams for the state.
