The streets of Detroit carry the heavy footsteps of law enforcement, as they draw closer to closing the chapter on the city's largest mass shooting incident. On Friday, Detroit Police announced the arrest of 19-year-old Demetrius Tiwan Shaw in connection with a mass shooting at a July block party, which left two dead and 19 injured, according to FOX 2 Detroit. Interim police chief Todd Bettison stated that Shaw's capture "should bring some assurance that the city of Detroit today is much safer," in an event still casting shadows despite the six months that have slipped by.
After authorities executed nearly a dozen search warrants across three cities, a total of 10 people were arrested, as reported by the Detroit Free Press. Shaw, having been previously identified as a suspect in a separate nonfatal shooting, is now charged with two counts of first-degree murder and 19 counts of assault with intent to murder. His connection to the mass shooting was unveiled, said Bettison, following a tip related to the May shooting in the same neighborhood.
In the midst of Detroit's crackdown on unpermitted gatherings, what transpired at that block party on Rossini Drive has left indelible marks on the community. Victims range in age from 16 to 27, hailing from various towns surrounding Detroit, indicating the far-reaching impact of the incident. Citizen tips played a crucial part in the breakthrough in this six-month-long investigation, which included the recovery of over 21 firearms and an estimated half a million dollars worth of narcotics, detailed Lt. Matthew Bray, according to The Detroit News.
Shaw faces serious charges, including homicide and assault, and is held on a $1 million bond. Police are still investigating other potential suspects.
