Residents in Detroit are getting a digital helping hand with the launch of the "Motor City Tech Bars," a new initiative offering free computer support and repairs to anyone in need. This program, rolled out by the Detroit Department of Innovation and Technology, aims to ensure that technology services and digital literacy are accessible to all citizens. Already, two locations at Redford Branch and Douglas Branch Libraries have swung open their doors to the public.
There's a plan for eight Tech Bars scattered around the city, ensuring at least one site is available in each city council district. Art Thompson, Director of the Department of Innovation & Technology, told the City of Detroit's official website, "Human-I-T is honored to collaborate with the City of Detroit and Detroit Public Libraries to empower Detroiters with equitable access to digital literacy skills training services and free tech support through the Motor City Tech Bar." The initiative is a strategic step towards bridging the digital divide that affects many communities.
The Tech Bars not only offer repair services, but they also provide one-on-one help and digital literacy courses, ensuring residents can fully engage with the digital world. With an eye on inclusion, these Tech Bars are positioned inside established Tech Hubs, building on the city's efforts to promote greater digital access. The city's approach aligns with that of its partners; Christopher Korenowsky, Chief Operations and Customer Experiences Officer of the Detroit Library, emphasized this point, stating, "The Detroit Public Library (DPL) has been at the forefront of bridging the digital divide for customers for generations," as reported by the city's official website.
Booking is straightforward; Detroiters can make appointments if they like, though walks-ins are also welcome at any of the tech bars, which also feature e-waste recycling options. The services are expected to roll out in three phases over the coming year, with more locations opening across different districts to ensure even access. The addresses and operation phases for each Tech Bar are listed on the City of Detroit's website, and for those who need to get in touch, a phone number and online request form are readily available at Human-I-T's dedicated page.
