A 19-year-old Detroit man, Raymonte Darrell Adams, is facing trial following an altercation last month that resulted in him allegedly hitting and dragging a Detroit police officer with his car. According to FOX 2 Detroit, the December 11, 2024, incident escalated when Adams was found parked on a sidewalk. He reportedly failed to comply with officers' orders and maneuvered his vehicle toward the police.
The affair began to unfold further as officers attempted to stop Adams, who then quickly reversed, hitting another parked vehicle, and allegedly drove toward an officer identified only as Officer A. In a moment charged with tension, an officer can be heard threatening to shoot, ultimately discharging multiple shots into the car as Adams drove forward, striking and dragging Officer A. FOX 2 Detroit reported another officer, identified as Officer B, fired shots at the back of the fleeing vehicle. Both Officer A and Adams were reported to have sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the confrontation.
Subsequently, Adams has been charged with several crimes, including assault with intent to murder. In announcing the charges, Prosecutor Kym Worthy emphasized the severity of the allegations. As recounted by ClickOnDetroit, Adams also faces charges of third-degree fleeing and eluding, as well as resisting and obstructing a police officer. Following an arraignment and preliminary examination, his bond has been set with terms including house arrest, leading up to his next court date on March 14.
Furthermore, the incident is under review by a Homicide Task Force composed of Michigan state police, Detroit police, and ATF officials, with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office awaiting their investigation report to determine if additional charges are warranted. An administrative review is also underway to establish whether the officers acted within department policy and training.
