The Detroit Red Wings are revving up for a unique tribute to the city's automotive history and robust hockey culture with their latest NHL Stadium Series uniforms. According to CBS News Detroit, the team revealed the specialized gear on Thursday, which includes a custom "Detroit" script across the chest that harkens back to classic car insignias. These uniforms will debut during the outdoor clash with the Columbus Blue Jackets on March 1 at Ohio Stadium.
Not content to make a nostalgic nod, the Red Wings' uniforms aim to visually echo the sleekness of the auto industry's finest. The design features laser-perforated details inspired by upholstered car interiors and debossed racing stripes to uniquely marry the area's love of cars and hockey. This blend of heritage and sport is also reflected on the helmets, which sport racing stripes and an oversized winged wheel emblem with a metallic finish reminiscent of automotive paint, as detailed by MLive.
Further driving home the Detroit spirit is the inclusion of "Hockeytown" emblazoned on the player pants, and the hem loop label featuring the team mascot, Al the Octopus. Fanatics, with input from both teams and the league, designed the Red Wings' uniforms, which will also bear a special "2025 NHL Stadium Series" designation on the right shoulder.
The Blue Jackets, meanwhile, are set to don uniforms that pay homage to Ohio's history and Columbus' cultural touchstones. Their design, inspired by uniforms worn by the Union Army, includes a new "CBJ" mark and two crossed hockey sticks on the shoulder, a subtle nod to the past. "The Cannon," emblematic of the Blue Jackets' alternate logo, appears in new metallic silver and red accents on the front crest. These details, observed by ClickOnDetroit, help to less conventionally tell the story of Ohio’s historical significance.
The Detroit Red Wings fans have the opportunity to pre-order these collector's items at all Red Wings team store locations to fully gear up before the team takes the ice in March. This event is notably the first outdoor game for the Red Wings since their 2017 NHL Centennial Classic appearance, marking a much-anticipated return to the open-air arena.
