A 17-year-old from Detroit has been charged with a series of offenses after leading police on a high-speed chase from Garden City to Detroit. According to The Detroit News, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced the charges following the incident, which occurred early Wednesday morning.
Garden City police officers attempted to pull over the teen at approximately 1:55 a.m. near Ford and Venoy roads after spotting what was reported to be a stolen vehicle. This escalated when the driver ignored the attempt and sped away, initiating the chase that had him allegedly reaching speeds up to 120 mph and trying to strike, pursuing police vehicles with the teen's car, according to reports from FOX 2 Detroit.
The charges against the teenager include third-degree fleeing police, receiving and concealing a stolen motor vehicle, reckless driving, and operating without a license, as noted by Prosecutor Worthy, who called the case "extremely troubling" and highlighted the ripple effects of car theft on victims' livelihoods, as FOX 2 Detroit detailed.
The pursuit concluded at the intersection of Bluehill Street and Denver Street in Detroit, where the suspect was apprehended. Despite the high-speed nature of the chase, no injuries were reported.
A preliminary hearing was held yesterday afternoon, and the 17-year-old received a $5,000 cash/surety bond with conditions including a tether, a prohibition on driving motor vehicles, and a ban on illegal drug use with a next court date scheduled for Feb. 18 at 10:30 a.m, according to information from ClickOnDetroit.
