Travelers venturing across the West Camas Slough Bridge in Clark County should brace for delays as the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) commences emergency pavement repairs starting next Tuesday, in a bid to mend the deteriorating state of the bridge's surface. A significant portion of the deck has suffered damage over time with recent heavy rainfall exacerbating the condition and WSDOT has had to impose a reduced speed limit to ensure traveler safety until the necessary repairs are made.
On Tuesday, traffic will be rerouted as crews focus on the eastbound lanes of SR 14 near the bridge at milepost 12.6, with lane closures slated from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., drivers are expected to take Exit 12 to Northwest 6th Avenue as their detour, the times of these crucial repairs are set by the mercy of mother nature, seeing as any significant rainfall could spell a delay or rescheduling.
Constructed in 1966, the West Camas Slough Bridge is still structurally sound with a rating of "fair," however, the pavement on the bridge deck is in dire straits, needing attention beyond these immediate surface-level treatments. The deck has been plagued by cracks, uneven surfaces, and now substantial potholes. The Washington State Department of Transportation, coping with a deficit of the full funds necessary to maintain statewide transportation infrastructures, has to judiciously allocate its restricted budget where safety needs are most dire, this entails that the current fixes are but an emergency response to a deep-rooted problem.
Given the scant funding, which amounts to only 40% of what is needed to maintain and preserve the highway system, WSDOT must prioritize, they'll divvy up the remaining maintenance budget among all state-owned roads and bridges, including those like the West Camas Slough Bridge where they stress the importance of safety and the intent to keep the bridge as safe as possible for travelers despite the lack of resources for a full resurfacing project, which is a vital, yet unfunded endeavor. "Travelers are advised to use caution in the area until repairs are completed," read a statement from WSDOT regarding the advisories currently posted for motorists as well as the specific callout for motorcyclists about the bumpy pavement conditions.
