Chapel Hill’s North-South Bus Rapid Transit (NSBRT) project is receiving a $24.4 million boost from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). This funding will help develop an 8.2-mile route with dedicated bus lanes and shorter wait times, along with improvements for cycling and walking paths.

According to the Town of Chapel Hill release, Chapel Hill Transit Director Brian Litchfield said, “We are excited to receive this grant award to bring faster, more reliable, and even easier-to-use service for our customers in this corridor, while also providing much-need cycling and pedestrian improvements.”

The project has now received over $32.5 million in federal funding, contributing to the total $183 million cost, largely funded by the federal government if President Biden’s budget plan is approved.

Congresswoman Valerie Foushee emphasized the broader benefits of the project, stating, “This award will help fund an accessible and sustainable bus system that will connect residents and visitors to job opportunities, schools, healthcare facilities, family, and more,” in the same release.

The project aims to reach 60% completion in the next six months. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with buses running on the new transit lanes by 2029.
