According to FOX 5 New York, Shinnecock Vice Chair Lance Gumbs described the billboards as "basically a gateway to the Shinnecock territory as we’re concerned." Despite a recent court ruling mandating the removal of the billboards, the Nation received support from the Department of the Interior, legitimizing their claims over the contested land.
Supported now by the Department of the Interior's recognition of the land as Shinnecock territory, the Nation sought to directly challenge previous court decisions. As reported by CBS News, this federal backing could significantly alter the landscape of the battle over what is known as the Westwood Property. The tribe has long faced opposition from the State and the Town of Southampton, obstructing attempts to fully utilize this land for economic purposes, including prior sales of cigarettes and the contested billboards.
While the dispute has been brought before the courts, the community's input has been a pivotal aspect, as observed by the Town of Southampton. Town Attorney Jim Burke explained the balance they are trying to maintain, saying, "We’ve been working with the nation for a number of years now to see what we can do here," as noted by FOX 5 New York. The surrounding residential developers have expressed concerns, prompting discussions on establishing a buffer zone and formulating an access point from Sunrise Highway to appease both sides.
Despite the state's persistent pushback, the Shinnecock Nation has remained undeterred, as reflected in Gumbs's statement, "The situation has always been with the Shinnecock Nation for 400 years - ‘NIMBY’- not in my backyard." He stressed that the days when different standards apply to different parties are firmly behind, as reported by FOX 5 New York.
