A Ferndale resident is facing multiple charges, including felony assault and criminal sexual conduct, after an incident in which he allegedly assaulted and strangled a woman before barricading himself in a home. According to WWJ Newsradio, Kenneth Hansen, 32, was charged following a report received by the Hazel Park Police on Sunday.
The report originated from an open 911 call around 6:50 a.m., near the area of I-75 and 9 Mile that straddles the Ferndale and Hazel Park border. Officers who arrived on the scene met a 32-year-old woman who claimed she had been sexually assaulted and strangled by Hansen. He was reportedly still inside the house when authorities arrived. A perimeter was established as law enforcement worked to communicate with the suspect and ensure an end to the situation.
As per the Ferndale Police Department's Facebook page, negotiations with Hansen continued for roughly two and a half hours. During these discussions, Hansen made threats of suicide and violence against others. Responding to concerns over safety for both the suspect and the community, authorities formulated a strategy to bring the situation to a non-lethal end.
As Hansen appeared at the front door, officers deployed a Taser to successfully subdue him. He was subsequently arrested without further incident. Details on how the victim and suspect were acquainted were not disclosed by police. Hansen's arraignment took place the following day, where he received a $300,000 cash bond. He is scheduled for his next court appearance on January 9.
