The former proprietor of the Alpine Motel, Adolfo Orozco-Garcia, has entered into a plea agreement in connection with the 2019 blaze that claimed six lives and was labeled the deadliest fire within Las Vegas city limits. According to FOX5 Vegas, Orozco-Garcia, along with Malinda Mier, who also claimed ownership, appeared in court on Friday facing multiple counts of involuntary manslaughter and neglect of duty. The charges stem from their failure to ensure the safety of tenants in the aging downtown building located at 9th Street and Ogden Avenue.
As disclosed by Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson, the catastrophic incident that occurred on December 21, 2019, could have been avoided if the property had been properly maintained. Wolfson alleged "intentional neglect" and a "disregard for the safety of tenants," citing inoperative fire escapes, alarms, and heating systems that forced residents to rely on their stoves for warmth. He emphasized, "If these defendants had responsibly maintained the property, these six victims would be alive today," according to a statement obtained by FOX5 Vegas.
In contrast, the plea deal which does not spell out a specific sentence has ushered in the possibility for less jail time than a trial might have imposed – with each count of involuntary manslaughter carrying a potential sentence of 1-4 years in prison or probation, as noted by Clark County District Court Judge Jacqueline Bluth, during the hearing that saw Orozco-Garcia enter an Alford plea on two counts of involuntary manslaughter and one charge of wanton disregard of safety, as outlined by 8 News Now.
In the aftermath of the fire, beyond the irrevocable loss of life, over a dozen individuals were injured, more than 50 were left homeless, and the building, which once housed 41 units, was later sold by Orozco-Garcia and eventually redeveloped into the DLUX Lofts. Orozco-Garcia, who has been free on a $50,000 bail since his arrest, is awaiting his sentencing, scheduled for June 3. This hearing will determine how the scales of justice will balance the weight of this tragedy against any plea for clemency. This information about the post-incident developments and Orozco-Garcia's bail status comes from an 8 News Now report.
