Former Metropolitan Transportation Authority CEO Thomas Prendergast has taken on a new role as CEO and president of the Gateway Development Commission. This announcement marks a significant shift in leadership for the commission which is responsible for major infrastructure initiatives, including the construction of the new Hudson River rail tunnel. In his previous tenure with the MTA, from 2013 to 2017, Prendergast oversaw key projects such as the opening of the Second Ave. Subway's first phase. As reported by NY Daily News, Prendergast stated, "The responsibility you’ve entrusted in me is significant — it’s not something I take lightly."

Taking over the responsibilities from Kris Kolluri, who has moved to lead NJ Transit, Prendergast now helms an agency that is poised to modernize crucial sectors of transportation in the Northeastern United States. The Gateway project, which Prendergast referred to as "the most urgent project in the United States of America" in a unanimity endorsed by the project commissioners, aims to enhance rail capacity and update the aging Northeast Corridor rail line, despite having worked for an infrastructure consulting firm before joining the commission. In a statement obtained by Trains.com, Prendergast conveyed his excitement, citing, "Gateway is something the region knows for a long time needs to get done," and the appointment represented "an opportunity I could not pass up."

Prendergast's experience includes various leadership roles at the MTA, including head of the Long Island Rail Road and New York City Transit. Moreover, his prior role as CEO of the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority before the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver adds to his extensive portfolio in transportation management. His unanimous approval by the commissioners underlines a strong vote of confidence in his capability to steer the Gateway Development Commission towards the successful realization of the expansive rail projects.

The Gateway project encompasses more than just the Hudson River Tunnel; it includes a broad range of upgrades and expansions. Specifically, the commission led by Prendergast is managing the development of two new rail tubes that will connect New York's Penn Station to northern New Jersey. Following the completion of the new tunnel, attention will be given to the 1910 North River Tunnel under repair, which currently serves Penn Station. The project's scope also extends to the Meadowlands, as workers adding tracks across the New Jersey swamplands include replacing bridges and expanding rail capacity, particularly near Secaucus Junction, as had reported by the NY Daily News.
