Front Street Animal Shelter has reintroduced its Doggie Day Out program, offering community members the opportunity to spend the day with a shelter dog. As highlighted in a video on the shelter's Facebook page, participants can take a dog for walks and visit pet-friendly locations. The shelter provides the necessary items, including a leash and vest, to ensure the dogs are properly equipped during their outing.

The initiative provides dogs with the opportunity to stretch their legs, socialize, and reduce stress outside the shelter, which may improve their chances of adoption. Volunteers, in turn, have the chance to give a dog a change of scenery. According to the shelter, the program is beneficial for both the dogs and the community. Phillip Zimmerman, manager at Front Street Animal Shelter, highlighted that the outings offer exercise, stress relief, behavioral insights, and exposure to potential adopters for the dogs, "This program is extremely beneficial for our dogs," said Zimmerman, citing the positive impacts of temporary escapes from the shelter environment, as reported by the Sacramento City Express.

After being suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and staffing challenges, the Doggie Day Out program has resumed following recent staffing increases and technological improvements. The shelter is now inviting individuals who are interested in spending time with a shelter dog to sign up for the program. More details and booking information are available on the shelter's website.
