Grand Haven, usually a peaceful lakeshore community in Michigan, witnessed a catastrophic event this past weekend as a commercial building erupted into flames. According to WZZM13, the fire started last Friday at 9:01 p.m. and raged until 5:15 a.m. the following morning, rendering the two-story structure a "total loss" as stated by the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety (GHDPS).
The fight against the blaze was not without its challenges, with issues stemming from both the water supply and inclement weather. Multiple agencies responded to prevent the fire from spreading to surrounding residences. Despite the extensive damage to the property, it was reported by MLive that no injuries occurred as the building, known as The Forum and located at 235 Fulton St., was empty at the time of the fire.
Housing several businesses, including Wildflower Yoga Studio, The Forum garnered a heartfelt response from the community, particularly when the scale of disruption became evident. Karen Fredricks, the building's owner, said to WOODTV8, "Well, there’s a lot of history. I have 19 tenants in there and (the) majority of them are women-owned businesses. Just a bunch of people helping the community with what they do. So it’s just heartbreaking."
Yet, in the face of adversity, a glimmer of hope flickered through the community's concerted efforts. Design Force Marketing opened its recently vacated premises to the displaced businesses. Mary Sherman, a partner at the company, expressed her sentiments through a social media offer that saw three businesses take up the offer within only 24 hours. "It’s truly just to give back to the community. I was born and raised here. He is from the area as well, so I love it here," Sherman told WOODTV8. "These are my people and I just want to take care of people as best as we can."
