A Grand Rapids teenager, Shyon Malik Armstrong, was sentenced to 50 months in federal prison yesterday following the discovery of weapons he brought to a high school graduation ceremony last year. The 19-year-old was apprehended with two loaded firearms at the event, which took place at Calvary Church on May 30, 2024, according to WWMT.
Authorities were alerted to the potential for violence associated with two feuding street gangs at the ceremony. Armstrong's apprehension was made possible by a vigilant Grand Rapids Police Department sergeant who observed a group behaving suspiciously and unrelated to the graduation proceedings. This observation led to the stop of a vehicle for an unspecified violation, as reported by WOODTV, and ultimately to Armstrong's attempt to evade capture.
One of the firearms found was an AR-style pistol equipped with an extended magazine capable of holding 35 rounds of ammunition. In capturing Armstrong, a significant potential threat was mitigated. The sentence delivered aligns with the national initiative, Project Safe Neighborhoods – a program aiming to reduce crime by developing effective strategies at the local level – as detailed by the officials.
"At one of life's most celebratory moments – a high school graduation – Mr. Armstrong created the risk of horrendous harm for these graduates, their families, and school officials," U.S. Attorney Mark Totten stated, as noted by FOX17. Anthony Laster, 19, also faced arrest in connection with the events of the day, although two other individuals in the group were not charged.
