A recent spate of gunfire near Downtown Jacksonville's James Weldon Park has left the community on edge. In less than 24 hours, two separate shootings have rattled the area, culminating in the injury of a young boy and damage to the nearby City Hall building. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has confirmed these incidents, sparking an active investigation into the violence that marred the New Year's celebrations.
The first incident occurred on New Year's Eve when an argument between two individuals escalated. One of the individuals produced a firearm and began "shooting in the direction of the second individual," according to a statement obtained by News4Jax. Although no injuries were reported at the park, the gunfire inadvertently caused damage to the structure of City Hall. The suspected shooter was later detained "several blocks away." JSO believes this to be "an isolated incident" and assured that there appears to be no further danger to the public. The initial victim who fled the scene has yet to be located.
In a second, tragic incident, a young boy was shot in the leg after two groups began to argue at James Weldon Johnson Park shortly after the New Year's fireworks display. The boy was caught in the crossfire, with JSO Sergeant Smith telling First Coast News that "at least two shooters" were involved. Despite his injuries, which are non-life-threatening, there is a touch of relief in that the boy is expected to make a recovery after being treated at a local hospital.
Authorities are now engaged in a thorough probe of both incidents. The JSO has two witnesses who are "cooperating" with the investigation, as per First Coast News. Similarly, a report by WOKV noted that despite the shock and disruption caused by the violence, no arrests have yet to be made in connection with the shooting that left the boy injured. The JSO is urging anyone with information about the shootouts to come forward and is providing a non-emergency number and a way to anonymously contact Crime Stoppers with any details that might assist in the inquiries.
