Over the weekend, an intense pursuit unfolded in Orange County when three suspects in ski masks led troopers on a high-speed chase, allegedly firing shots during the escape attempt. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported the incident began when a trooper tried to pull over a car for going 113 mph in a 65-mph zone on I-40 westbound, near the 266-mile marker, early yesterday morning. The driver failed to yield, sparking the chase that ended with a crash in Chapel Hill.
During the pursuit, multiple parked cars were struck by gunfire, as the suspects began shooting at the pursuing trooper. A local resident, speaking to WRAL News, expressed the apprehension of encountering such a dangerous situation during an otherwise routine commute. According to CBS17, the suspects' vehicle was stolen, adding to the severity of the crimes.
The car chase concluded when the vehicle, now in Chapel Hill, crashed, and the suspects—still masked—fled on foot. Officials have reported that no injuries were sustained during the pursuit, but the suspects remain at large. The NCSHP has not found the trio yet, and the search continues with urgency.
Law enforcement officials and the community are on high alert as the investigation proceeds. As mentioned by ABC11, the lack of any injuries is fortunate, considering the potential danger a situation of this caliber can present. Citizens are urged to report any information that could lead to the apprehension of the individuals responsible for the incident, as the authorities strive to ensure that justice is served and public safety is maintained.
