Thirteen-year-old Xavier Thompson died during basketball practice at Thornton Middle School after suffering an asthma attack in November. His family, represented by attorney Tony Buzbee, is pursuing legal action and calling for changes to the school district's emergency policies, according to Click2Houston.
In a demand letter revealed by Click2Houston, attorney Buzbee describes the incident involving Xavier Thompson as "a preventable tragedy," criticizing Cypress-Fairbanks ISD for a lack of preparedness. Xavier's classmates, not school staff, were the first to contact his parents. The Thompson family is seeking compensation and improved emergency response training for school staff. Brittany Thompson, a counselor in the district, received her son's belongings "in a black trash bag," and no high-level administrative outreach followed, as mentioned by Houston Chronicle.
The Thompsons are pushing for mandatory CPR training and certification for all school staff after the tragic loss of their son, Xavier. They have set a February 7 deadline for the district to respond to their demands for better emergency preparedness. They also plan to start a nonprofit, "Breathe for Xavier," to teach CPR, asthma recognition, and inhaler use. If the district does not act, they may pursue "an alternative approach," possibly legal action, as stated by Houston Chronicle.
