The annual Prescribed Fire Fest is returning to Edward Medard Conservation Park this weekend, offering attendees a chance to delve into the world of wildland firefighting and land management. According to Hillsborough County's official news release, the festival is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 25, and promises a host of interactive activities designed to engage both kids and adults from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
For the younger crowd, kids can transform into Junior Wildland Fire Fighters for a day, collecting stamps in their Prescribed Fire Fest passports at various stations. Among the highlights, miniature enthusiasts and curious minds can watch prescribed fire in action within the boundaries of a sandbox, with demonstrations documented by Hillsborough County taking place at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and noon. Attendees ending at 12:30 p.m. can also get their hands on wildland firefighting equipment, feeling the weight of a fire hose in a test of their skills.
The bustling event will showcase a variety of vehicles and tools crucial to the practice of prescribed fire. Detailed by Hillsborough County, curious visitors can explore the differences between a brush truck and your standard firetruck, as well as trying on the protective gear of wildland firefighters, with the activities running throughout the day until 12:30 p.m. Moreover, partner agencies will provide exhibits on conservation efforts and local wildlife, and one can expect the dramatic entrance of a Florida Forest Service helicopter.
For an engaging educational adventure, consider joining a guided hike along the Singing Bluffs Trail. According to the county's official website, these hikes provide an up-close look at how prescribed fires play a crucial role in ecosystem management and count toward the popular Hiking Spree program. Hikers are encouraged to reserve their spots early for sessions starting at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 11:30 a.m. Additionally, weather permitting, wildland fire technicians will conduct a live demonstration of a prescribed fire at 1 p.m.
The Prescribed Fire Fest offers a chance to learn about the important role of fire in managing the landscape. The event is free, but there is a $2 park entry fee. It will be held at Edward Medard Conservation Park, 6140 Turkey Creek Rd., Plant City.
