Southland Center, a shopping destination in the Downriver Detroit area, has been acquired by Greenwood Global, an Illinois-based investment firm. Taylor city officials confirmed the acquisition, noting the mall's previous financial difficulties, including a loan default by the former owner, Brookfield Properties, in 2022, according to CBS News Detroit.
Amy Jurecki, senior general manager of Southland Center, stated, "This is going to be an exciting new chapter for Southland." The mall has experienced changes with some storefront vacancies, store openings, and vacant vendor booths. Long-time visitors, such as Thomas O'Neil from New Boston, have observed these shifts. The city of Taylor reported over $8 million in revenue for Southland in the first half of 2024, as reported by The Detroit News.
Greenwood Global, led by Alex Berman, plans to revitalize the 905,000-square-foot Southland Mall by increasing foot traffic and maintaining its operations, rather than converting it into rental properties. Berman stated, "We like it because we believe it's a strong mall in a strong market." The mall remains occupied with anchor stores like Macy's, JCPenney, Best Buy, and Cinemark, and Greenwood Global intends to expand leasing options to support the local economy, as stated by Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News.
