A Jackson County judge upheld the convictions of three men involved in the plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Despite requests for a new trial and resentencing, Judge Thomas Wilson maintained his ruling at the 4th Circuit Court, according to the Michigan Department of Attorney General.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel emphasized the importance of the court's decision, stating, "Public officials must be able to carry out their duties without fearing for their lives." She also said, "ensuring those who seek to endanger public officials and undermine our democratic institutions face consequences for their actions." Nessel's office reaffirmed their commitment to prosecuting acts of domestic terrorism, as reported by the Michigan Department of Attorney General.
Paul Bellar, Joseph Morrison, and Pete Musico were convicted in 2022 for charges like providing material support for terrorism and felony firearm possession. Bellar and Morrison requested new trials, while Musico sought reconsideration after his 2024 appeal was denied. Judge Wilson denied the motions but made a technical amendment to Bellar and Morrison's sentencing documents. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel emphasized, "No one is above the law, and my office will continue to prosecute acts of domestic terrorism, irrespective of presidential pardons or political communications. We will not waver in our commitment to protecting the people of Michigan," as stated by the Michigan Department of Attorney General.
