As Jacksonville prepares to ring in the New Year, city offices and facilities are gearing up for a temporary shut down in observance of the holiday. If you're planning on getting any city-related business done, you might want to hit pause and take note of the closures scheduled for New Year's Day, as published in a recent announcement on the City of Jacksonville website by the local government.
Key buildings such as City Hall at St. James on Duval Street and the Ed Ball Building on Hogan Street will be closed; so too will sites like the Duval County Courthouse and the Jake M. Godbold City Hall Annex, alongside the Municipal Code Compliance Division and Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department administrative offices, not to forget, all branches of the Tax Collector's office and Property Appraiser will be shuttered today. Citizen services will see a brief interruption with the 630-CITY Customer Service Center closing its doors today and reopening the following morning at 8 a.m. even though customers may request a city service anytime online on their customer help portal.
For those looking to imbibe a bit of culture or require community services during the festivities, the Ritz Theatre & Museum, the Victim Services Center, Kids Hope Alliance and all managed community and senior centers and gymnasiums will not be open for New Year's Day. Social Service Division and several administrative offices which handle daily aspects of city life ranging from solid waste management to stormwater and landscaping are also among the listed closures. However, it's not all operations grinding to a halt—garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection services will run per usual ensuring no pile-up as the year transitions.
Recreation and leisure won't be entirely off the table, Southside Tennis Complex leaves its gates ajar yesterday, welcoming patrons from 9 am to 5 pm but, like the city's tennis centers, will cut visitors loose for the first day of 2025. If you're trying to start your year with a brush with nature Huguenot Memorial Park and Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park offer a breath of fresh air; with the former granting early morning access to pass holders and the latter maintaining its 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. regular hours, the announcement clarifies that those without prepaid passes may face restrictions after 5:30 p.m. and campers have specific check-in windows to observe.
The Jacksonville Public Library is also adjusting its schedule; with all locations closing early at 6pm on New Year's Eve, they remain closed on New Year's Day while Alachua County Public Schools (ACPS), seemingly unfazed by the widespread closures, plans to operate from 10 am to 4pm on both December 31, 2024, and today.
