Judicial shifts in Macomb County point to continuity and experience as Judge Rachel Rancilio steps up to become Chief Judge Pro Tempore. Scheduled to begin her tenure next Tuesday, Rancilio takes over from Judge Matt Switalski, as reported by the 16th Judicial Circuit Court, having proved her mettle since her election to the Circuit Court Bench on November 8, 2016. Before earning her judicial robes, Rancilio sharpened her legal acumen in private practice where she navigated the complex labyrinths of domestic, civil, and criminal law, as per Macomb County's website.
Her judicial journey began in earnest on January 1, 2017, and has seen her preside over the Family Division of the Macomb County Circuit Court since January 1, 2023. Here is where the subtle impropriety emerges – she has handled hundreds of weighty divorce and custody cases, juvenile matters, and neglect proceedings. Those demanding cases, which can so deeply affect the arc of a person's life, evidently prepared her for the broader responsibilities of leadership. It is not a load carried lightly, and as part of her expanded scope, she also embraced the role within the Court’s Adult Drug Court program since last year.
Chief Judge James Biernat has chosen not to rock the judicial boat, opting for continuity and a tested hand in leadership. "Judge Rancilio will do an excellent job as Chief Pro Tem just as Judge Switalski did. They will both continue to be incredible assets to our bench," Biernat said, as cited by Macomb County's website. This vote of confidence suggests that the bestowal of duties is less an upheaval and more a reaffirmation of steady jurisprudence.
Giving up the baton but not the playing field, Judge Switalski, whose tenure as Chief Judge Pro Tempore began on January 1, 2016, will now preside over the Family Division beginning the same day Rancilio steps into her new role. Switalski's new appointment ensures that his extensive experience remains close at hand within the division he previously shepherded.
