Tragedy struck a quiet Kirkland neighborhood earlier this week when an 81-year-old motorist hit two juveniles as they were walking home from school. The incident occurred on the 13700 block of 84th Avenue NE, shortly before the final school bell tolled on Monday afternoon. According to the City of Kirkland's official website, the driver, a resident of Kirkland, reportedly lost control of his vehicle after falling asleep at the wheel.
The Kirkland Police responded to the scene of the vehicle versus pedestrian collision in the Finn Hill area, which saw the two young individuals on a pedestrian walkway succumb to an unexpected and violent brush with mortality. The victims, whose names and exact ages have not been disclosed, were given medical treatment on site before being transported to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver, on the other hand, remains enmeshed with the ongoing investigation, after having conscientiously phoned 911 to report the incident himself. Meanwhile, authorities are diligently working to reconstruct the circumstances that led to this distressing event.
