Los Angeles faces yet another dark moment as detectives from the South Traffic Division investigate a fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a 40-year-old man in the South Figueroa Corridor, with the LAPD urging witnesses to step forward. According to a press release by the Los Angeles Police Department, the tragedy unfurled yesterday, around 7:20 p.m., when the man attempted to cross Figueroa Street at West 53rd Street outside of an unmarked crosswalk and was struck by a speeding vehicle, after the collision, fled the scene without providing any aid as the victim lay mortally wounded.
The Los Angeles Fire Department subsequently arrived and pronounced the individual deceased, the identity of whom is withheld pending notification of kin; the search for the driver appears to be hindered by a lack of immediate leads or identification. The LAPD's Hit-and-Run Reward Program Trust Fund, established by the City Council in 2015 stands to offer up to $50,000 as a reward for information leading to the successful capture and prosecution of the perpetrator—a bittersweet consolation for a grieving community.
Moving forward, local authorities underscore the pressing necessity for both pedestrians and drivers to adhere to traffic regulations to ensure a similar misfortune is averted, with motorists specifically reminded to halt at accident sites, connect with emergency services, and cooperate till the necessary information is exchanged. The public plea by the STD detectives, Detective Flannery and Officer Cha, seeks out anyone who might provide crucial details on the night's events, inviting them to contact South Traffic Division at 323-421-2500 or through various confidential channels, such as the L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers hotline and the "P3 Tips" mobile app.
