Las Vegas and its surrounding areas are gearing up for a cocktail of rain and snow today, as low pressure makes its move across the region. According National Weather Service Las Vegas NV, places near and south of Las Vegas, specifically Mountain Pass and higher elevations in Mohave County, will likely see the most substantial snowfall. Travelers are advised to prepare for slick roads and possible delays, with weather advisories in effect and subsequent updates forthcoming.
The situation is fluid at best, with the National Weather Service canceling Winter Weather Advisories for Inyo, Esmeralda, and central Nye counties. While snow was reported to start accumulating at Mountain Pass, it seems that significant snowfall might give Clark county's mountains a miss. The National Weather Service has maintained, however, that the Winter Weather Advisory for Mohave County looks accurate and might even be bumped to a Warning depending on how events unfold.
According to the updated forecast, precipitation should wind down by Tuesday morning in most areas, while Mohave County could still see some action through Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service emphasized that the low tracked farther south and west than anticipated, resulting in less precipitation for areas north of Las Vegas and altering previous forecasts significantly. They added, "High resolution models are in decent agreement showing a band of precip which could produce several inches of snow on the Hualapai Mountains from this afternoon through tonight."
Looking ahead, the weather pattern is set to undergo a change with dry conditions and light winds thanks to weak ridging that's expected to stay through Friday. However, a new system may be entering the scene this weekend, brining with it some uncertainty in terms of track and timing. The National Weather Service outlined that "breezy west to southwest winds would also be possible Saturday," though it's still early to pin down any concrete impacts or precipitation chances.
For those flying, the storm system could cause disruptions today and tonight. Harry Reid Airport and nearby areas may see showers in the morning and afternoon, with low visibility during heavy rain. Spotters have been alerted to report any significant weather, including frozen precipitation or visibility issues.
