In a display of remarkable composure and quick thinking, Cidnee Schramm, a sheriff's dispatcher out of Macomb County, became the guiding force in a unique delivery last weekend when a couple found themselves delivering their baby with her help over the phone. The event unfolded early morning, around 5:42 a.m. when a Clinton Township man dialed 911 after his pregnant wife's water broke and she began having contractions that were one minute apart, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit.
The call, which quickly escalated as the man's wife was in the throes of labor, saw Schramm providing step-by-step assistance - including directions on how to clear the baby's airways and stimulate breathing; this conversation was later detailed in a report by The Detroit News. "We are incredibly proud of the composed and professional manner in which Dispatcher Schramm handled this call," Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said, reflecting the sentiments of a community grateful for the dispatcher's preparedness and poise in the face of an unexpected situation.
The successful home delivery was audio documented, capturing Schramm’s calm demeanor as she instructed the couple through the birthing process, ensuring the safety of both mother and child, as heard in excerpts shared by MLive. The ordeal culminated with the arrival of Clinton Township firefighters, who took over the care of the newborn and the mother shortly after the delivery, around 6:00 a.m. on Sunday.
