A tragic incident unfolded on the West Side of San Antonio as a man lost his life in a fierce house fire. The blaze engulfed a residence near the 1000 block of Montezuma Street, with fire officials rapidly responding after the fire was reported just before 3 p.m. Tuesday. The San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) firefighters found the house overwhelmed by heavy smoke and flames, a dire scene as they later discovered an adult male victim inside, according to KSAT.
The SAFD team had to quickly act to attack the fire by entering the home through a window. Unfortunately, upon finding the man, who was reported to be in his 60s and disabled, they made efforts to "to immediately perform life-saving measures," as SA News 4 reports, but their attempts were in vain. The man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Further complications arose during the emergency response as firefighters had to navigate around a downed power line and a collapsing carport, News 4 San Antonio added. While they managed to control the majority of the fire within 15 minutes, the house suffered extensive damage and was deemed "most likely a total loss" by officials on scene.
The cause of this catastrophic event is still unknown, with investigations ongoing. "The cause of the fire is still under investigation," SAFD indicated, noted by KSAT. No injuries to firefighters were reported in the incident.
