On an ill-fated New Year's Eve, a Wyoming Walmart became the backdrop for a violent dispute that has now resulted in significant prison time for one of the perpetrators. Latrell Young, at the age of 22, has been sentenced to a term of 11 years and eight months to 20 years for his role in the shooting which injured two, including a bystander. Young was also given a concurrent lesser sentence for assault and an additional two years for felony firearm charges, as reported by woodtv.
The incident unfolded after Young, accompanied by Camrin Carpenter, initiated a verbal altercation with another shopper. The situation escalated rapidly, ending in Young discharging a firearm multiple times in the busy store as they chased the victim who had tried to escape. In addition to the targeted individual, a woman was also unintentionally shot, but both victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to wzzm13.
FOX 17 News reported that Young's actions did not exist in isolation, as they were part of a broader string of crimes, including an attempt to rob the same victim of his cell phone and a subsequent robbery of a gun safe out of Ada the following week. While Young chose to stand trial, Carpenter accepted a plea deal and faced a maximum of five years in prison.
In court, Young expressed remorse, stating, "I'm sincerely sorry to the two victims who were harmed during this incident, as well as the families and everyone who was put in harm’s way," as he addressed the court. Young, who is a father of three, spoke of his desires for rehabilitation and change so that upon release he could be a contributing member of society. "I disappointed a lot of people in this incident just by being involved… Again, I’m sincerely sorry for my involvement," he told the court, as conveyed by Woodtv.
