An officer-involved shooting occurred this past Friday when Orlando Police Department officers responded to a report of a man with a gun at a local BP gas station on South John Young Parkway. Upon arrival, officers confronted a suspect dressed in all black and still holding the firearm. Despite the situation that demanded clear and immediate safety measures, the scene was handled without further incident once law enforcement took control, as reported by WESH.
After the suspect ignored multiple commands to drop the weapon, an OPD officer shot the man. Subsequently, the suspect, whose identity had not been disclosed, was transported to a hospital and is currently in stable condition. Eyewitness News has been tracking the deployment of a large enforcement presence following the incident, disrupting traffic along the major thoroughfare and causing concern among local workers. Luiz Siqueira shared his apprehension, per WESH stating, "If something happens, like, with a gun we are afraid, right? We need to be secure, right?" he said. "We are afraid that could happen with anyone, right?"
In a press conference, as reported by WFTV, OPD Chief Eric Smith disclosed the suspect had recently been released from prison in 2023 after serving a 20-year sentence for second-degree murder. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave, maintaining the standard protocol for such incidents. Further details, including the charges the suspect will face, will be released as the investigation, led by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, unfolds.
