A three-alarm fire broke out at the Owl Metals recycling plant in Dundalk, Baltimore County, causing part of the building to collapse. Firefighters worked through last night to control the blaze, evacuating at least one person. Nearby residents were told to stay inside, and officials warned others to stay away. Due to the building's instability, firefighters fought the fire outside to stay safe, WBALTV reported.
Residents experienced the fire's immediate effects firsthand. Sharon Thompson, who lives near the recycling center, recounted how she could feel the flames from her yard. After a neighbor raised the alarm, Sharon hastily arranged for her father's safety, who relies on oxygen. Despite the frightening scenario, the Baltimore County Fire Department (BCoFD) reported only one injury requiring hospital transport for precautionary measures, CBS News Baltimore elaborated.
Firefighting assistance arrived from multiple fronts, including Baltimore City Fire units and several fire rescue boats, indicating the magnitude of the threat posed by the fire. As the firefighters worked determinedly, the Maryland State Highway Administration (MDSHA) closed all lanes on MD 157 between Bethlehem Boulevard and Merritt Boulevard. The Baltimore County Police Department also advised drivers to steer clear of Peninsula Expressway and the Stansbury Park areas of Dundalk during the operations.
