Reports of ICE operations have been spreading in Michigan communities. Residents and advocacy groups are working to inform and protect their neighbors. FOX 2 Detroit covered arrests made by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with Homeland Security Investigations confirming that 'immigration violators' were being rounded up in the area.
Rumors on social media caused panic in Kalamazoo, impacting local businesses like El Ranchero. Manager Anai Rietkerk told that false alarms led to fewer customers and concerns among staff. The Arab American Civil Rights League intervened to inform residents of their rights during immigration enforcement. Arab American Civil Rights League founder Nabih Ayad stated, "You can't go for 10, 20, 50, 100 years and do something a certain way. Then come down one day and say ‘oh this is gonna end tomorrow, we’re just gonna put you on a plane and get you out of here’," as reported by WOODTV and FOX 2 Detroit.
Recent immigration crackdowns have raised concerns about civil rights and due process. Rula Aoun from the Arab-American Civil Rights League said, "So the fact that individuals are being picked up, put through these expedited procedures without lawfully determining whether they can stay for other reasons, I think that that’s extremely frightening." Despite rumors, Muskegon PD confirmed they have not worked with federal agencies on immigration enforcement. The Arab American Civil Rights League has set up a hotline at 1-800-243-0302 for help or to report concerns, as stated by WXYZ.
