The Milwaukee community is commemorating the enduring legacy of former President Jimmy Carter, following his recent passing, by recognizing the tangible impact he left behind through his devotion to Habitat for Humanity’s housing projects.
Recounting the hands that built her home in 1989, Cecelia Dukuly, a resident of 23rd and Walnut, reflects on the blessing it was to work alongside Carter. "It's a blessing. God blessing," Dukuly expressed to FOX6 News, as she recollected the week spent with Habitat volunteers, including the former president and his wife, Rosalynn. A total of six homes were constructed and another eight were renovated during that initiative, with over a thousand volunteers contributing to the effort.
Neighboring homeowner Diana Wilson shared with TMJ4 News the cordial sentiment Carter inspired, saying, "The smile is what touched me every day, because when you see him smiling, you smile." She also noted Carter's egalitarian love, "He has a good heart for anybody. He loved everybody." These personal anecdotes highlight the warmth and indelible mark Carter's hands-on advocacy left on the residents of Milwaukee.
Brian Sonderman, CEO of Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity, spoke of the seismic shift Carter's involvement brought about for the organization. In an interview reflecting on the legacy that arguably transformed their operations, Sonderman told Spectrum News 1, "It had never done new construction. It had only done rehabs prior [to Carter's visit in 1989]... and the organization gets a call that the President wants to build homes for the entire week in your city, and it lead to a mobilization of over 1,000 volunteers." Sonderman highlighted the humanity at the core of Carter's post-presidential work, infusing the notion that, despite setbacks, there is always a pathway to uplift others through communal love.
Sonderman further added, "His post-presidency was not defined by his defeat in 1980 — we all suffer setbacks, we all suffer challenges — but he didn't let that defeat define the remaining years in his life," as per Spectrum News 1. This sentiment echoes throughout the community, signaling that President Carter’s commitment to service has etched an enduring impression on the heart of Milwaukee, with the homes and lives he’s touched serving as a testament to a legacy rooted deeply in compassion and selflessness.
