The Office of Community Wellness and Safety (OCWS) is at a crossroads following the departure of former Director Ashanti Hamilton. The vacant position has sparked calls for community involvement in selecting his successor, bringing attention to how the city addresses public safety and supports those affected by violence.

According to a release by the City of Milwaukee, there is growing support for public input in appointing a new director. "Given the importance of this office to our efforts to increase public safety, and to support healing for residents impacted by violence, it seems like a given that the community should have direct input on how they feel this office could best serve them before a new director is appointed," a statement from Alderwoman Sharlen P. Moore.

Currently, the Mayor has sole authority to appoint the OCWS director without Common Council approval. However, this process is being questioned, especially after the recent turnover at the office. The second departure in three years has raised concerns. There is now a proposal to require Common Council approval for future OCWS director appointments.

This proposed change aims to involve the Common Council in the process and ensure stronger leadership at OCWS. Alderwoman Sharlen P. Moore stated, "The work of OCWS affects the entire city, and our residents deserve nothing less than the highest quality candidate," in the same release.
