Residents of Wake Forest have reason to mark their calendars, as the Northern Community Food Security Team (NCFST), in collaboration with Ripe for Revival, is ready to roll out its mobile grocery store again this Thursday. Positioned across from the Northern Regional Center at 350 E. Holding Ave., the mobile market will be open for business on the second and fourth Thursday of every month from 3-5 p.m., come rain or shine. According to a recent announcement by the town of Wake Forest, the initiative continues to support the local economy by sourcing its offering of fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy from local and regional farmers and does so using a pay-what-you-can model.
This initiative strives not just to provide food but to also promote inclusivity and community engagement. In tandem with the market on Thursday, a representative will be present to openly discuss the 2035 Wake Transit Plan Update, a sweeping initiative set to enhance public transportation with nearly $1 billion in transit investments over the next decade. The mobile market does not only bring food to the people, but it also seeks to closely connect to improve systematically how residents navigate the breadth of Wake County.
The NCFST's model is centered on accessibility and affordability, ensuring fresh, nutritious food is not a luxury, but available for all, irrespective of economic standing. The market operates with certain purchasing limits—specifically for protein, dairy, and eggs—to ensure wide availability, but no such caps are placed on produce. When it's time to check out, "shoppers will be given a suggested total. Shoppers can then pay the full amount, a portion of that amount, or nothing at all," as stated by the town of Wake Forest. Both cash and card payments are accepted at the market.
