In a significant move for healthcare coverage in Central Ohio, Mount Carmel Health System and Aetna, a CVS Health company, secured a multi-year contract as the clock ticked down on their current agreement set to expire at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Day. According to a statement on Mount Carmel's website, the new deal ensures that "patients and members to maintain the in-network access to the Mount Carmel hospitals, facilities, and health care providers they trust." This announcement, released last night, marked the end of a six-month negotiation period, reported ABC 6.
While negotiations with Aetna reached a successful conclusion, Mount Carmel confirmed that its services would no longer be in-network for Humana policyholders. The health system expressed determination to reach an agreement offering, "We rely on fair payment from health insurers so we can sustain the high-quality care patients like you depend on and need," according to a statement released by a public relations firm on behalf of Mount Carmel and reported by 10TV. The hospital emphasized ongoing efforts to negotiate a fair arrangement with Humana, signaling hope for future in-network coverage restoration.
In a related development, Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center also announced a new contract with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, which was reported on Monday. Like Mount Carmel's with Aetna, this deal will ensure that patients with Anthem insurance will continue receiving in-network healthcare services at OSU Wexner Medical Center. The Dispatch shared the information about this agreement.
However, OSU Wexner Medical Center faces network challenges as the details unfold. Beginning today, Anthem Medicare Advantage patients will find themselves without in-network access. Despite ongoing discussions, a separate deal for the inclusion in the Anthem Medicare Advantage network was not reached for 2025, as highlighted by an Anthem and Ohio State agreement announcement earlier in the week.
