A deadly fire in a Mount Vernon trailer has prompted an ongoing investigation after leaving one person dead Thursday evening. According to KOMO News, the blaze was reported around 7:10 p.m., and, upon arrival, first responders discovered a trailer engulfed in flames in the 500 block of Mobile Drive.
The combined efforts of Mount Vernon police and fire departments were not able to avert the tragedy. As firefighters tackled the flames with "an offensive strategy," they found one person deceased inside the trailer, as stated by KOMO News. Running through the early morning hours, Mount Vernon police detectives meticulously processed the scene, their efforts described in a media release.
In efforts to uncover the fire's origins and the cause of the victim's death, the Skagit County Coroner has stepped in to take custody of the deceased, as reported by Cascadia Daily. The identity of the victim remains unreleased to the public as the investigation unfolds.
Adding to the complexity of the tragedy, the MVFD Fire Marshal has joined police detectives in the investigation of the fatal fire. Lt. Dave Shackleton encouraged witnesses with any relevant information to come forward, urging them to speak up and reach out to the local authorities. Via a statement obtained by Cascadia Daily, Shackleton appealed to the community: "Call the 24-hour dispatch line at 360-428-3211 or the Mount Vernon Police Department at 360-336-6271."
