An unsettling start to the New Year unfolded in Upper Manhattan when a man was reportedly stabbed while on board a northbound 2 train, and in a separate, possibly related incident, another person was stabbed on a nearby subway platform.

According to ABC7 New York, the train incident occurred just before 9:50 a.m. on New Year's Day, with the 31-year-old victim sustaining a stab wound in his back. Struggling to a moment of peace, he managed to exit at the 110th St Cathedral Parkway station and was subsequently transported to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition. As of now, the assailant remains at large. Police have described the suspect as a man in his 30s, roughly 5'10" tall with a slim build, last seen wearing a puffy jacket and carrying a red suitcase.

Not even within a close bracket of time from the first incident, NBC New York reports a similarly gruesome assault at the Cathedral Parkway–110th Street station. Here, a different victim was stabbed in multiple areas, including the head, arm, and hip, on the southbound 1 train platform at about 9:30 a.m. During what's typically a crowded weekday morning rush, the attack seemingly came out of nowhere, unsettling the rhythm of the commute.

The second assailant, as described by the authorities, was last seen sporting a red sweater, black jacket, and black ski mask, and is believed to have fled down Broadway. Emergency services hastily took the second victim to St. Luke's Hospital. The authorities have yet to confirm if the stabbings are connected, but they urge anyone with information to immediately come forward. Both assailants remain at large, with the police actively investigating the scenes and canvassing the area in hopes of bringing the perpetrator, or perpetrators, to justice.
