A tragic incident transpired on the White Pine Trail in Mecosta Township, where a 60-year-old man from Newaygo County suffered a fatal snowmobile crash. As reported by FOX 17, the Mecosta County Sheriff's Department deputies were dispatched to the scene near 180th Avenue on Saturday afternoon, where the victim was pronounced dead at the site of the crash.
The man, whose identity has yet to be released pending family notification, apparently lost control of his snowmobile and veered off the established trail, which ultimately led to him crashing into a stand of trees. Authorities continue to thoroughly investigate the factors that may have contributed to the cause of the accident. According to MLive, the call for the crash came in around 3:35 p.m. this past Saturday, and numerous emergency services were in attendance at the scene, including Mecosta County EMS, Mecosta Township Fire and Rescue, and Meceola Central Dispatch.
Additional insights from the Mecosta County Sheriff's Office described by WZZM 13 indicated that the man was traveling south along the trail before the crash. The sheriff's office confirmed that he was alone at the time of the accident and was found by deputies having sustained fatal injuries.
The Mecosta County Sheriff's Office has yet to publicly release more details surrounding the crash but emphasized the importance of safety when engaging in such activities. The community awaits further information as the investigation continues to officially determine what factors were responsible for causing the crash.
