Following a series of wildfires that devastated communities in Southern California, a new challenge has emerged for evacuees seeking refuge at the Pasadena Convention Center. A norovirus outbreak has hit the temporary evacuation shelter, with the Pasadena Public Health Department confirming three cases of the highly contagious virus. These individuals are part of a larger group of 28 experiencing acute gastrointestinal symptoms, as reported by CBS News Los Angeles. The norovirus, known mostly to spread through shared food, water, and utensils, is causing a stir among health officials due to its ability to quickly and easily infect large numbers of people, especially in close-quarter settings like a shelter.

The Pasadena Public Health Department has taken immediate action to try to contain the outbreak, stating, "The department said it will install more handwashing stashing and implement more frequent restroom cleaning as well as disinfectants strong enough to kill Norovirus," according to CBS News Los Angeles.

The American Red Cross has been operating the shelter since January 10, working diligently to manage the needs of those affected by the Eaton Fire. To further ensure safety and control the spread of the outbreak, the shelter has isolated the sick, and healthcare providers from Kaiser Permanente and AltaMed are giving necessary medical assistance on-site, as per  KTLA.

Amid this public health concern, the Pasadena Public Health Department has been working closely with the Red Cross and healthcare partners to monitor the situation and prevent further spread. As stated by CNN, Pasadena Public Health stated "The [health department] team will continue to meet with onsite health services partners and monitor the situation to prevent any further spread."
