The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has received approval in a new audit report from the North Carolina Office of the State Auditor (OSA), confirming that the department adhered to its fiscal year 2024 budget. The OSA found that NCDOT kept its expenditures at $7.68 billion, under the allocated $8.26 billion. None of the four spending categories exceeded the projected amounts, according to the Office of the State Auditor release.
State Auditor Dave Boliek praised NCDOT’s fiscal discipline, saying, "One of the worst things a government can do is large-scale overspending. We see it far too often in Washington, but it’s not completely foreign to North Carolina either. I’ll always strive to expose government waste, but I’ll also highlight fiscal responsibility. The state Department of Transportation stuck to its budget this past fiscal year, which will only help as infrastructure needs mount in Western North Carolina. I’m grateful to the audit team for putting in the hard work necessary to produce this financial assessment," in the same release.
The full audit report, detailing NCDOT's fiscal discipline, is available online. The findings were shared with Gov. Josh Stein, members of the North Carolina General Assembly, Secretary of the Department of Transportation Joey Hopkins, and Chairman of the Board of Transportation Michael S. Fox.
