In a swift move that underscores his dedication to the needs of his constituents, Governor Josh Stein has executed his first executive orders with the aim to support areas in Western North Carolina ravaged by Hurricane Helene. During a visit to Asheville, the governor announced these measures, focused on aiding residents as they face the challenges of winter following the natural disaster.
As per the official press release, Governor Stein's executive orders are intended to cut through red tape and hasten the provision of temporary housing, allowing individuals to reside securely on their property as they undertake repairs. The governor, having also made the journey to Swannanoa, visited storm-damaged homes and conferred directly with the affected families, inadvertently witnessing the resilience of communities amid crisis.
Stein's orders entail not just the repair of homes, but also private roads and bridges, which are crucial for the restoration of fundamental services. Access to emergency assistance, school transportation, and other vital connections are contingent on these infrastructures. The governor's mandates also include establishing offices dedicated to coordinating both emergency response and the longevity of recovery efforts in western regions of the state.
The establishment of the Advisory Committee on Western North Carolina Recovery is another cornerstone of Stein's strategy. The Committee, which is given longevity through the final executive decree, is envisioned to play an instrumental role in steering the region back to stability. State employees received an additional boon, being granted 16 extra hours of community service leave to assist with hurricane-related matters, marking a notable increase from previous allowances.
