The North Carolina Department of Transportation is once again opening applications for its free bicycle helmet giveaway. This initiative, part of NCDOT's effort to promote safety among the state's youngest cyclists, is geared to ensure that kids have the protective gear they need while they're out riding. According to a press release on the NCDOT website, the Integrated Mobility Division, which orchestrates the giveaway, is inviting organizations to apply to distribute these helmets to children in need.
"Wearing a bicycle helmet is an easy way to reduce the risk of head injuries if you crash," Brennon Fuqua, director of the Integrated Mobility Division, told NCDOT in an interview. The Division is known to support public transit systems, and assist in the planning of bicycle and pedestrian facilities. They are making an attempt to seriously encourage wider usage of helmets among children. As part of their strategy, the Department is offering varying quantities of helmets—25, 50, 75, or 100—to applicants, which they are expecting to indeed partner with local enforcement agencies or community organizations to further bicycle safety education.
Those interested in the program can apply through the NCDOT's Bicycle Helmet Initiative webpage. The initiative positions itself ahead of National Bike/Walk to School Day, with a hard deadline for applications set on the amorous date of February 14th. Applicants are encouraged to use these helmets as a central feature in bike safety events, leveraging partnerships with entities such as local law enforcement, parks and recreation departments, schools, or even religious institutions.
Since its inception in 2007, the Bike Helmet Initiative has been an integral part of NCDOT's outreach, focusing on the well-being of the state's children and fostering a culture of safety. Over the course of the last five years, it has managed to consistently distribute over 75,000 free bike helmets, underwritten by the sales from 'Share the Road' specialty license plates and federal transportation funds. This ongoing focus on bicycle safety through helmet distribution represents a commitment by the NCDOT to directly improve the welfare of its youngest residents, especially those who can't otherwise afford the potentially life-saving gear.
