In a decisive move against the hidden scourge of human trafficking, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost’s office has unveiled a multi-faceted approach for the public to report any suspicions or evidence they might encounter. The statewide Human Trafficking Hotline, officially active since last fall, now offers four ways for individuals to make a difference and possibly save lives, with options tailored to fit the convenience and comfort of the reporter.
Calling the hotline at (844) END-OHHT remains the primary method. Still, the urgency to extend the reach of aid and the gravity of the situation is clear in Yost’s words, "Human trafficking thrives in the shadows, but we cannot allow it to stay hidden," as reported by the Ohio Attorney General’s office. Ohioans now have additional means, including texting "ENDOHHT" to 847411, downloading the END OHHT app available for Apple or Android devices, or filling out an online form at the Ohio Attorney General's website.
Once a tip is received via the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation-operated hotline, it's examined by analysts trained in criminal intelligence. They sift through the provided information and funnel actionable tips to local law enforcement or victim advocacy centers for follow-up actions, including providing much-needed social services. This streamlined procedure ensures that each clue given by residents is meticulously investigated, helping victims find the aptly termed "Highway to Hope."
Call 911 is still the recommended course of action for situations where immediate response is crucial. Attorney General Yost is calling on the people of Ohio to recognize their potential impact in this fight, stating, "We need every Ohioan to be our eyes and ears — because one tip can save a life, one tip can help us free someone who desperately needs our help," as per the information shared by the Ohio Attorney General's news release.
