The Ohio State Highway Patrol has issued a gentle reminder for all drivers bracing for the winter months ahead. With unpredictable weather patterns, authorities are pressing on the importance of road safety, advising motorists to be cautious during this inclement season.

Records from the past winter indicate that Ohio was no stranger to hazardous conditions, with 8,104 incidents reported on roads made perilous with snow, ice, or slush. "Snowy, icy weather is a fact of life in Ohio," Governor DeWine said, according to a statement obtained by Ohio State Highway Patrol. He added, "If you have to travel when the weather is bad, it’s important to give yourself plenty of time to get where you’re going so you can take it slow."

Last year's data from the Patrol showed a stark number: 15 fatal crashes due to inclement weather, with unsafe speeds and tailgating being major contributors. Notably, 21% of those accidents were due to drivers traveling at speeds unsafe for the conditions. Patrol Superintendent Colonel Charles A. Jones emphasized safety in his statement, "Motorists are encouraged to slow down and use extra caution. Leaving more space between vehicles and staying patient can help ensure a safer trip for everyone." According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

This call to action from the Patrol isn't without preparedness tips. They've suggested keeping essentials in the vehicle: an ice scraper, jumper cables, a tow rope, and even snacks for the long haul. There's the law to remember, too, requiring headlights whenever windshield wipers are used. In an emergency, "If your vehicle becomes stuck in snow, clear the tailpipe of any possible debris to decrease the chance of carbon monoxide poisoning," the Ohio State Highway Patrol advises. For breakdowns or accidents, the recommendation is straightforward - turn on your hazard lights, position your vehicle safely off the roadway, and call for help.
