Tragedy struck in the Frankford section of Philadelphia when a shooting at a ballroom claimed one life and left two men injured. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Monday in the 4600 block of Frankford Avenue, a bustling area home to a variety of businesses, according to a report from 6abc. Police arriving at the scene found a chaotic tableau with over 40 spent shell casings from what they believe to be at least two different weapons including a high-powered rifle and a handgun.
Authorities reported that two victims, both in their early 30s, were rushed to the hospital in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds to their lower bodies. A third man, believed to be in his 20s, was found dead inside the ballroom, as per Chief Inspector Scott Small's statement obtained by 6abc. The ballroom, nested among other establishments such as a bar, recording studio, and hair salon, was the epicenter of the violence despite no reported event taking place at the time.
Meanwhile, NBC10 disclosed additional details including the recovery of a semiautomatic handgun assumed to belong to the deceased 29-year-old victim. "It appears that there may have been some sort of shootout," Chief Inspector Small told NBC10. Surveillance footage from the building is currently under review by the police, who are also speaking with multiple witnesses in an effort to piece together the circumstances that led to the shootout.
Further information, relayed by CBS News Philadelphia, indicated that the two injured victims were able to make their way outside, leaving a trail of blood that helped officers locate them; they were conscious when found. "We believe the 30 and 34-year-old, after being shot in the ballroom, were able to run outside — because we followed trails of blood and that's where we found both of those victims," Small detailed.
As the investigation progresses, the community looks for answers, and police are still working to determine a motive for the shooting, as well as a description of the suspect or suspects. Philadelphia is no stranger to gun violence, and this latest incident adds to a growing tapestry of cases demanding attention and action. Anyone with information about the shooting is being encouraged by the police to come forward by calling 215-686-TIPS.
