Eight men were arrested in a six-month crackdown led by Genesee County's Sheriff's Office for attempting to engage in sexual acts with minors. The Genesee Human Oppression Strike Team played a key role in the investigations. The suspects include two undocumented immigrants, an active-duty soldier, and others from various backgrounds. Sheriff Chris Swanson said, "This doesn’t impact just underage children, this impacts anyone that is vulnerable," as reported by FOX 2 Detroit.
Among the arrested is a 22-year-old active duty soldier, Kyle Horiski, who, according to Swanson, was apprehended with bulletproof vests and ammunition in his vehicle. Horiski, stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, was visiting Michigan for the holidays when he allegedly began seeking sex workers online, eventually agreeing to meet with an individual he believed was 15 years old, per the information shared by WNEM. Two undocumented immigrants from Honduras, Marvin Estrada Sarmiento and Winfredo Osorto Maradiage, were among the men arrested for attempting to pay minors for sexual acts. Sarmiento, previously expelled to Mexico under Title 42, was a carpet layer in Burton, while Maradiage showed apparent indifference to being sent back to Honduras.
Since 2018, the Genesee Human Oppression Strike Team operation has led to 223 arrests in its ongoing effort to combat child exploitation. The sting operations, which involved law enforcement officers posing as decoy minors, exposed individuals seeking illegal encounters with children. Among the suspects was Kendall Dunbar, a 31-year-old man on parole, who admitted to communicating with a teenager but claimed he couldn't go through with it, acknowledging it was wrong. Another case involved Brian McCarrick, a 32-year-old from Bay City, accused of grooming and sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl. Sheriff Swanson emphasized the importance of parents having open conversations with their children about online safety, warning of the dangers posed by predators. "Predators won’t stop and neither will we," Swanson stated, according to WWMT and WNEM.
