Orlando police fatally shot a man outside a BP gas station last Friday, and he has died from his injuries, as confirmed by officials. The individual, identified as Marvin Martin, 63, succumbed to unknown complications following the incident, reported the Orlando Police Department.
On the afternoon of the shooting, according to ClickOrlando, units were dispatched to the 400 block of South John Young Parkway in response to reports of an armed man. Eyewitness accounts described Martin dressed in all black, holding a gun along the road. Upon officers' arrival, Martin was given several commands to drop the weapon, which he did not comply with; this led to an officer shooting him. Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith stated, "The suspect refused the commands and was shot by one officer."
Martin was previously hospitalized and in stable condition following the shooting but later died of resulting complications. During the event, law enforcement presence surged in the area as they attempted to engage with Martin. OPD Chief Eric Smith, in a statement detailed by WFTV, expressed the predicament faced by his officers at that moment, justifying their response: "He put my officers in a position where they had to defend themselves and protect the community."
Marvin Martin's criminal history was highlighted by OPD, including a conviction for second-degree murder in Miami Dade County, for which he served 20 years before his 2023 release. The recent scene played out at a busy business intersection, adding to the tension of the encounter. The officer involved has been placed on leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducts a standard investigation into the shooting.
