The landscape of municipal employment is being rewired in Philadelphia, thanks to a new upskilling initiative aimed at enhancing the skill sets of city employees. In an effort spearheaded by the Office of Human Resources (OHR) and the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the inaugural group of participants in the Electronic Technician Upskilling Program, a branch of the City College for Municipal Employment (CCME), celebrated their graduation on December 18, 2024. According to a press release from the City of Philadelphia, the program, undertaken in concert with JEVS Human Services’ Orleans Technical College, furnished five city employees with superior skills reflective of the dynamic demands of today's electronic industry.
Having undergone rigorous training over six months through a blend of in-person and online coursework, the graduates hail from diverse city departments including the Airport, Water, and Streets, with this new credential, they can now entertain the opportunity of career advancement within their respective areas of public service. The training encompassed a slew of competencies, such as designing, installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining electrical equipment, broadening the technical prowess of these municipal employees and, in the process, prepping them for promotion-laden landscapes that stretch out in front of their recently elevated acumen.
The ceremony crackled with an energy reflecting the graduates' appreciation, as they grasped certificates that not only symbolized their newfound knowledge but also the doors it would open. "The excitement from program graduates was electric on Wednesday," the city's statement recalled, ensuring that the sense of accomplishment and pride was well documented.
